Our commitment

Audrey and Alfie was started by two Melbourne-based mums driven by a shared desire to provide wholesome food, for babies, toddlers and children. Zoe, a dietitian, and Carly, an education and wellbeing policy professional, set out to provide parents with a healthy and more sustainable alternative to the supermarket offerings. We want our little ones, and yours, to grow up with a healthy planet. We truly believe that fresh, local ingredients are key to delicious tasting food and good health. We also believe in supporting the environment by keeping food local and reducing food miles. That’s why we source our ingredients as locally as possible, and also use organic suppliers where we can. We seek to minimise our impact on the environment by providing recyclable packaging wherever possible, limit the amount of product packaging we use, and provide reusable and recyclable delivery boxes and gel packs. We make ethical food choices that support humane and sustainable farming practices.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

We provide families with a healthy alternative to the supermarket offerings, which are commonly ultra-processed1. Ultra-processed foods are not just bad for our health2 but also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use3. By contrast, Audrey and Alfie provides nutritious food, made from whole foods with minimal processing. By snap freezing our products, we avoid the need to add any preservatives or other ultra-processed ingredients, or heat treat our products. We’ve also made a conscious choice to provide recyclable packaging wherever possible, limit the amount of product packaging we use, and provide reusable and recyclable delivery boxes and gel packs. We source ingredients locally wherever possible and make and store all food in Melbourne, to minimise food miles and help reduce our carbon footprint. 1.UPFs and recommended intake levels of nutrients linked to non-communicable diseases in Australia http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2019-029544 2. • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

We are committed to minimising our impact on the environment by: - providing products in larger pouches (no individual packaging), and avoiding additional outer wraps - offering to collect delivery boxes and gel packs for reuse, for customers who reorder - using recyclable or compostable packaging where possible. Our bowls are made from reclaimed and rapidly renewable sugarcane pulp, and are compostable and home-recyclable. Bowl lids and cardboard packaging sleeves are home recyclable too. Our finger food pouches may be recyclable via local soft plastics recycling programs. We are currently exploring other options to reduce the environmental impact of our pouches in future. For example, by converting to plant-made and/or fully recyclable options. Our delivery boxes (from Chilltainer) are made from 95% sustainable paper fibre and are home recyclable. We chose these a as they are made from recyclable materials and are home-recyclable too. They also avoid the need for an internal silver sleeve used in traditional cardboard boxes. We chose Thermogard gel packs as they don’t contain any chemical or toxic ingredients and can be safely reused or emptied into your garden for better water retention.
