Birdsnest

Here at birdsnest we like to think of ourselves as your Wardrobe Wingbirds! Our mission is to help you find the perfect outfit that makes you feel amazing - inside and out. Our little nest is based in the country town of Cooma in the Snowy Mountains

Our commitment

birdsnest is a regionally based community of people that cares deeply about each other, the women we serve and the world around us. We have introduced many initiatives from programs to reduce our environmental impact, to new partnerships with incredible charity organisations, to a renewed commitment to embrace diversity and portray women in a more realistic light in our imagery and most recently our lifetime returns and rehatched initiative. birdsnest rehatched helps us all share a bigger and more circular wardrobe by giving our customers a simple platform to rehome beautiful pieces that still have plenty of life and love left to give. The fashion industry faces important and complex issues, and while birdsnest still has so much to learn, we are on a journey to greater transparency and sustainability. It is a road of continuous improvement.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Climate change is an urgent issue for the world we live in and reducing our environmental footprint is a central focus for us at birdsnest. It is a continual improvement process adopting what we are learning about sustainability and circularity in the fashion industry into what role we can play in that. Together with our community, we are helping extend the life of the clothing we bring into the world. birdsnest rehatched helps us all share a bigger and more circular wardrobe by giving our customers a simple platform to rehome beautiful pieces that still have plenty of life and love left to give. When it comes to packaging we commit to using the most environmentally responsible packaging solutions available. In terms of waste in the the production process, as part of partnering with our clothing suppliers, we ask the following: All production processes will be conducted in a way that is as safe as possible for the environment and conforms to local environmental laws and standards. Waste will be minimised and recycled, and in particular offcuts and raw material residue from the production of our garments will be recycled or reused, rather than sent to landfill. In 2015 we installed 288 x 75.00 kWp solar panels to power our Nest.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

We are currently giving our customers a wide selection of fabric choices. We are educating ourselves on new initiatives in the sustainable fibre space, such as recycled fabrics, and looking into how these can be incorporated into our ranges. We will continue to offer more fabric choices in the future. If you are seeking to find or avoid any fabric - please use our “Material” filter available on all the catalogue pages on our site. There are some principles we have adopted around sourcing materials which include the following: No animal fur is used in the production of the garments offered through birdsnest. This includes Angora fur from rabbits. No fabric is knowingly sourced from areas where any of the ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) terms are breached. For example, there are current concerns over Uzbekistan Cotton and forced labour. Fabric processes need to be compliant with ISO standards and no dangerous chemicals used in the production of the clothing.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

We are absolutely committed to ethical sourcing across all areas of our business. On each item page on our site you are able to find where this garment was made in the list of features and we are building on that information, providing more details as we gather them. As part of partnering with us, each supplier signs up to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code of conduct which is founded on the conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and is an internationally recognised code of labour practice. And while we are confident in our supplier partners, we are committed to ensuring compliance to these principles and so have implemented a social compliance audit program for our suppliers, currently conducted by an independent body called QIMA. We believe in working together with our suppliers to continually improve and influence positive change. In 2019, we became a foundation member of the Ethical Trade Initiative (ETI) and in 2022 we became full members. Through their mentorship we are striving for continuous improvement beyond audits, whereby we acknowledge our associations with our suppliers as long term partnerships, and aim to keep abreast of the human rights challenges within each region we produce.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

Good intentions need to be built in and these are the programs that birdsnest has put in place to make giving back part of what we do everyday. 1. Grassroots Sponsorship: We are supporters of small community fundraisers, particularly supporting better health, education and equality outcomes. birdsnest has provided over $140,000 in donations and vouchers since 2019. 2. Market days: We run physical markets at the nest to find homes for our seconds stock, 50% of sales on the day are donated to a charity partner. Our first market days together raised over $40,000 for our partner charities. 3. Charity Partners: Our current Charity partners include Catherine Hamlin Foundation, School for life, Keep it Cool, Save the Children fund, The Butterfly Foundation and Cerebral Palsy Alliance. You can read more about these partnerships in the link below.

  • How has your company made a commitment to achieve and maintain inclusion & diversity (e.g. Gender / Race / Ethnicity / National Origin / Sexual Orientation / Religion / Disability / Age)?

We are focused on nurturing and inspiring you to be confident in the skin you’re in, no matter what age, ability, ethnicity, or body shape. Embracing diversity and inclusion starts with our team. In our nest HQ, amongst our 160 employees, we have 18 different nationalities and cultures proudly represented. We are lucky enough to have some minority groups represented including those who live with a disability and those who identify as gender neutral. The age range of our team starts at 15 and extends to 72 years of age and women hold the majority of our leadership roles. We celebrate this diversity as a gift, it breathes creativity, empathy and strength into our little community. MODEL DIVERITY - It's our intention to represent our wider community through the models we select to wear the clothes on our site. After all, we want her to rock her outfit, in the moment, whatever her age, body shape, ability or ethnicity. INCLUSIVE SIZE RANGE - Ensuring we offer an inclusive size range in our garments is extremely important to us. We want to provide the best possible shopping experience for everyone - regardless of your size or shape.

Birdsnest rehatched is part of us taking responsibility for the clothing we bring into the world.
