Buzz Balms

Buzz Balms

Frustrated with the countless plastic packaged, imported products available, Hilda (founder) set about being the change by creating Buzz Balms! Armed with her husband's beeswax she creates and stocks plastic free, Australian made balms and products.

Our commitment

We're committed to creating all natural balms and plastic free product alternatives for the equestrian and their four legged partners. As an environmental scientist, the impact caused by our throw away society is all too familiar. Because of this, we strive to be the change we wish to see and avoid plastic packaging, search for alternatives and promote others doing the same. While we are extremely proud of our handmade beeswax balms, our Shampoo Bars were a wish list item we were committed to delivering to our customers! We were stoked to deliver a Shampoo Bar direct from Artisan soap maker, Vonnie, that is 100% natural, 100% palm oil free, completely plastic free and most importantly, at an affordable price! We're not stopping there though and have many more products in development that showcase the wonderful bees we keep and the makers we support.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Packaging We aim to eliminate plastic packaging in our products and shipping. We currently use compostable and cardboard mailers for our products as well as hex wrap (paper) for extra protection. Our shipping labels are compostable as is our sticky tape! Our products are packaged either as is, in cardboard push tubes or aluminium tins which are infinitely recyclable. Shipping We provide customers with carbon neutral shipping options with Sendle.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

The beeswax used in our balms are harvested from our very own bee hives. The oils are all extra virgin with the majority sourced from Australian producers. All products are palm oil free.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

All balms are made by us! Our fabric products are handmade right here in Brisbane, by the lovely Maddy and our Shampoo Bars are handmade in Kleinton, QLD by the lovely Vonnie. We do not produce any products internationally and are wildly passionate about promoting Australian produce, products and makers.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

We often partner up with Equine Action Queensland donating a portion of all products sold. We also regularly donate and sponsor Equestrian Events, some of which include Toorbull Pony Club events and Avenel Horse Trials. We also support the works of Precious Plastics Margaret River not-for-profit group by purchasing their recycled hooked combs and distributing to our customers as we're passionate about community and creating a circular economy.

  • How has your company made a commitment to achieve and maintain inclusion & diversity (e.g. Gender / Race / Ethnicity / National Origin / Sexual Orientation / Religion / Disability / Age)?

As a couple run business we haven't had the opportunity to expand and employ people yet. However, my husband is part aboriginal and seeks to include family in the business as we grow.

  • How does your circular model or circular initiative work?

By packaging and shipping our products in recyclable and compostable materials we aim to contribute to a circular economy by reducing the creation of waste, in particular plastic. We source locally wherever possible, be it ingredients or new products. We promote aspects of a circular economy and sustainable product alternatives via our social media presence.
