Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express

Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express

Known across the globe as 'The World's Most Beautiful Voyage', Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Express has been sailing Norway's waters since 1893, pioneering a route that forever changed the future of the coast and its communities.

Our commitment

Below are the key sustainability initiatives encapsulating where we are today, our goals for the future, and how we will achieve better sustainability across four main areas: - 'Sea Zero' is our flagship project of sailing a zero-emission ship by 2030. We are also working on environmental upgrades for all seven of our ships. - 'Build Local Communities' aims to strengthen coastal communities by continuing to support local businesses and creating ripple effects - 'Green Guest Experience' will provide guests with a more sustainable travel experience by offering more environmentally friendly options - 'Through Our People', we want to create a better workplace for our employees, with a focus on health, safety, and welfare.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

We’ve begun our most ambitious sustainability initiative ever in our 130-year history: to develop zero-emission ships tailored to the Norwegian coast by 2030. We are partnering with SINTEF, one of Europe’s largest independent research organisations, to explore solutions in energy efficiency and battery electric power. Prior to this by 2024, we will have transformed all seven of our ships with major green upgrades, in one of the largest environmental ship upgrades in Europe. Our entire fleet will be more energy efficient, cutting CO2 emissions by 25% and NOx by 80%, and three ships will be upgraded to hybrid power. On a voyage with us you won’t just see the Norwegian coast; you’ll taste it too. We are proud to support 50 local farms, bakeries, and producers from across Norway. In our onboard restaurants, enjoy the likes of melt-in-your-mouth cod from Vesterålen, award-winning cheeses from Lofoten, and quality craft beer from Bergen. Sourcing our food locally isn’t just about fresh, farm-and-fjord-to-table flavours. It’s also about achieving the lowest footprint possible and making sure there is minimal food waste.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

Though our goal is zero emissions, we are doing what we can with the ships and the technology we have today. That’s why we’ve invested €100 million into green upgrades for our existing fleet of seven ships, including transforming three ships to use hybrid-power. By 2024, these changes will have cut CO2 emissions by 25% and NOx emissions by 80%. We also source our food locally on board, not just for its fresh fjord-to-fork flavours but also to achieve the lowest footprint possible via minimal food waste.

  • How are the service/s you offer environmentally friendly?

Below are our key green credentials: - Certified biofuels: From approved sustainable sources. - Minimised energy use: Through new propeller blades, new bulbous bow, new gears, and new control systems. - Streamlined hulls: That optimise inertia and reduce drag when sailing. - Free from single-use plastic: With biodegradable or long-lasting, high-quality alternatives. - Shore-power connectivity: That allows all ships to ‘plug in’ to electricity when docked in port, reducing emissions. - State-of-the-art wastewater treatment: Systems to minimise emissions to sea.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

Hurtigruten Foundation is a collaboration between Hurtigruten, our guests, partners and private donors. Together we unite in our commitment to fight climate change, strengthen local communities, and stop unsustainable mass tourism. We are dedicated to supporting the local communities we visit, and to creating beneficial ripple effects that continue long after we have left. By trading locally and sourcing services such as food produce and excursions from local suppliers, we contribute to the livelihood and welfare of people. We are proud to partner with 50 local producers from across Norway and take pride in serving great food to our guests on board our ships.
