Ilan Style

Dedicated to creating high-quality native Australian wellness products, which are friendlier to people and the environment. At Ilan Style, we are 100% Indigenous female owned and our aim is to nurture, share and celebrate culture.

Our commitment

Ilan Style’s founder is both a proud Indigenous woman and an environmental scientist, we have a naturopath product developer and our team members are passionate conservationists! It stands to reason that every decision we make for Ilan Style has our customer’s personal wellbeing, along with cultural and environmental sustainability, at the forefront. We believe it is our responsibility to stand behind our heritage and our values with honesty, transparency and consistency. We won't compromise, because we want to ensure our legacy is a beautiful future for generations to come. 'In the Torres Strait Islands, my ancestral home, rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and ocean plastics are threatening our land and sea Country. This is jeopardising our beautiful vibrant culture, our homes, our place and our very existence.' Kerry Arabena – Ilan Style Founder

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Ilan Style is doing what we can to combat the environmental issue of consumable packaging waste and plastic pollution in our supply chain. Particularly because these issues threaten the land, waterways and biodiversity of the Torres Strait Islands, the ancestral home of our founder. - Ilan Style is voluntarily a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO). - Our tea is packaged in reusable and recyclable screw-top tins, with cork gussets (not plastic). - Our loose leaf tea is kept fresh in Natureflex compostable wrappers. These are certified to Australian Standard AS 5810 and AS 4736/ by the Australasian Bioplastics Association. - Our product labels are printing on recycled paper. - Our Affirmation Cards are printed on recycled paper and are free from single use plastics (including laminate). - Our postage packaging is as small as possible for the parcel delivery, and is made from FSC-certified recyclable cardboard. - We use recycled packing material to protect post items. - Our delivery labels and packaging tape are compostable items from Hero Packaging. - We offer carbon neutral delivery. - Native Australian bushfoods are sourced locally and travel less carbon miles than imported ingredients.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

The majority of Ilan Style tea ingredients are native Australian bushfoods grown and harvested on Country. Bushfoods such as lemon myrtle, Kakadu plum, peppermint gum, anise myrtle, quandong and strawberry gum are perfectly adapted to the Australian environment and have reduced or no requirement for farm chemicals and extra water, when compared to many non-Indigenous crops. Ilan Style tea products are almost certainly organic, however we cannot guarantee this about 100% of our ingredients 100% of the time - and therefore we won't make that claim to our customers. Our product packaging is designed for reusability, and recyclability at end of life. Our teas are packaged in tins and we have used cork wadding (rather than plastic) inside the lid. There are no single-use plastics in Ilan Style products.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

We are a startup business with a small product range. We manufacture locally and we pack and ship our products in-house. We only work with credible and trusted suppliers who meet our ethical standards, and this includes their understanding of who they are buying from, and conducting regular audits of their raw material suppliers. As a 100% Indigenous female-owned and run business, Ilan Style is against the unethical practice of 'Black Cladding'. We are Supply Nation certified, which means we are a genuine Indigenous-owned business, and we insist on working with at least two other genuine Indigenous-owned businesses within our own supply chain. This helps to contribute to the prosperity of the Indigenous communities those businesses belong to.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

Ilan Style launched in April 2023, and we are in the process of establishing a partnership for the Ilan Style Fellowship. The Ilan Style Fellowship will support Indigenous Australian communities by providing scholarships for Indigenous students. These scholarships will play a vital role in creating opportunities for Indigenous Australian youth to access education, reconnect with critically endangered language, and build a better future for themselves and their communities. We look forward to updating when the Ilan Style Fellowship launches later in 2023. "Our vision at Ilan Style is to celebrate and promote Indigenous culture in a meaningful and impactful way. We believe that through our products, including our new range of Indigenous teas, we can not only create awareness but also provide tangible support for the communities we are inspired by," says Kerry Arabena, proud Meriam woman, Founder of Ilan Style.
