Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Responsible innovation is at the core of our brand. Our Biodegradable range and Carbon Neutral Brief are two examples of how we’re working towards more sustainable leakproof underwear. Five key areas we focus on to make the biggest impact for people…and the planet. 1. Reduce waste – first, we provided an alternative to the problem of single use disposable waste, now we’re working toward a zero-waste future by finding recycling pathways for our products after customer use. 2. Better materials - we work to source fabrics that align to our preferred material standard and have a lesser environmental impact than conventional alternatives. 3. Responsible supply chain – we work with our manufacturers to protect and improve the rights, wages and working conditions of the people in our supply chain. 4. Climate action – we work with our supply chain to reduce carbon emissions, and positively influence water use, waste and biodiversity. 5. Packaging and logistics – to reducing the environmental impact of delivering our products to our customers we use recycled and compostable packaging.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

We put a lot of time and effort into looking at fabric composition and assessing our fabric’s performance and sustainability credentials. We prioritise natural, renewable and biodegradable fabrics and recycled synthetics to ensure quality, longevity and lower overall environmental impact. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton, viscose and lyocell made from bamboo, non-mulesed Merino wool and recycled nylon and polyester. Third-party testing and certifications, such as Global Organics Textile Standard (GOTS), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 ensure the sustainability and performance of our fabrics are verified and give confidence that they are safe for people and a better choice for the planet.

  • How are the service/s you offer environmentally friendly?

We want to have a positive impact on people and the planet, so we create reusable leak-proof apparel as a sustainable alternative to single-use disposables, such as pads and tampons. On average, menstruating people use about 14,000 single-use period products in their lifetime.1 We’ve designed our product to replace the need for these disposable products whilst also ensuring our products can be reused month after month, year after year. Sustainability and designing for longevity are at the heart of our daily operations and business decisions. Our products combine innovation and performance, so when you buy Modibodi you can be confident you’re choosing a product that has been designed with both the environment and our customers in mind. We use innovation to ensure each one of our designs is of the highest quality and effective, so anybody who experiences leaks can live more comfortably and confidently, without limits.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

We are very lucky to have longstanding relationships with a few partners factories who have been making our products since the brand started. Their understanding of our values and care in our product production is instrumental in the quality of the product that we create. To support and ensure we maintain high ethical standards in our supply chain our partners agree to our Code of Conduct which is based on the International Labour Organization's core standards for safe, fair and healthy working conditions. We collaborate with our suppliers using a suite of auditing platforms and tools to monitor and continually improve the environmental and social impacts of our supply chain. Our manufacturing supply chain for GOTS organic cotton is audited and certified against the GOTS criteria for both environmental and social impacts and many of our suppliers also participate in the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), which similarly supports ethical working conditions. Traceability of our supply chain is a significant and ongoing task, that helps us to ensure our desired environmental and social standards are being met. We are able to trace approximately 70% of our inputs back to the raw product.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

Giving back is at the heart of the Modibodi business and our brand’s DNA. We’re committed to improving access to sustainable menstrual products for every body, in our core markets and developing countries. A key focus is ensuring accessibility of product choice for first-nations communities and rural people. Our Give A Pair program is a collaborative initiative with our customers. Every dollar our customer’s donate goes towards putting a five pack of reusable, leak-proof underwear into the hands of people who need them. Together we have donated over 130,000 pairs of pants. That’s over $2,600,000 worth of underwear and dignity for many. We support our social impact partners and experts in the space of menstrual equity, taboos and education to do their work and use our platforms to share their messages around periods, it is only through bigger conversations that we can bring periods into the day-to-day narrative as a normal bodily function and an important everyday topic for people who bleed.

  • How does your circular model or circular initiative work?

We have a circular design approach that incorporates both natural fibres and recycled synthetic fibres across all our ranges. First, we design our products for longevity, considering the performance and sustainability of each fibre we use to create the best product with the best end-of-life options we can. Across our styles we use biodegradable materials like wool, bamboo or cotton, along with recycled fibres. Second, our products are designed to perform so they can be reused and reused for years before they reach the end of their useful life. Lastly, we are putting lots of energy into exploring recycling options. Landfill is the last place we want your well-loved Modibodi underwear to end up and while we do have a biodegradable range, this isn’t an option for everyone. In 2022, we launched the Recycled Pairs Project – a recycling pilot to explore recycling pathways for period underwear.
