Salvos Stores

We proudly prevent over 40 million items from ending up in landfill every year through generous donations. 100% of profits from your purchases go towards funding vital Salvation Army programs for Australian communities in need.

Our commitment

At Salvos Stores, the circular economy model has always been at the heart of what we do and how we do it, but it has never been more important than it is today, as the retail industry finds itself in dire need of a sustainable ‘revolution’. In addition to receiving, sorting, and reselling donated goods in-store and online, our stores also have processes in place to recycle items like rags, paper and cardboard, e-waste, batteries, mobile phones and printer cartridges. We remain committed to using circular economy thinking to achieve the complementary goals of promoting sustainable shopping practices, minimising our environmental impact, and providing community support and services.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

At Salvos Stores we have a variety of processes in place for repurposing or recycling what we can’t sell immediately. Some unsellable textiles are processed into industrial rag, while other items not suitable for the Australian consumer market are exported to developing countries for relief aid. We are committed to working with Governments and industry leaders to come up with both onshore, circular economy solutions to reduce the need to look offshore and further manage our environmental impact.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

100% of the profits from your purchases and donations help us fund The Salvation Army programs that transform lives for the better. The Salvation Army runs programs to end hunger, homelessness and build stronger families and communities across Australia.

  • How has your company made a commitment to achieve and maintain inclusion & diversity (e.g. Gender / Race / Ethnicity / National Origin / Sexual Orientation / Religion / Disability / Age)?

Salvos Stores acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we meet and work and pay our respect to Elders past, present and future. We value and include people of all cultures, languages, abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and intersex status. We are committed to providing programs that are fully inclusive. We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of people of all ages, particularly children. The Salvation Army is committed to inclusive practice that recognises and values diversity. We are ensuring our services affirm the right to equality, fairness, and decency for all LGBTIQA+ people, rectifying all forms of discriminatory practice throughout the organisation. Our shared values are Integrity, Compassion, Respect, Diversity and Collaboration, and are at the centre of all that we do.

  • How does your circular model or circular initiative work?

From Donation bin to Shop floor to New home Every single item that is donated to Salvos Stores gets individually sorted, evaluated, and placed either in store or into one of our recycling streams. Once donations are received by a store, they are moved to a sorting room where the store team will separate them into clothing categories or season. Each category will be carefully sorted by a team member who will review each item and decide, for example, which pieces of clothing are in saleable condition (clean and undamaged), and which will need to be repurposed. Clothes that have been processed for sale are then priced based on their condition, quality, and original retail value before being displayed on the shop floor for them to find a new owner. By giving these products another life, the action of purchasing preloved goods becomes a means of continuing what's called the ‘Circular Economy’- and Salvos Stores are steadfast in getting the sustainable word out to continue to ‘slow’ fashion production down! In most stores, some donations may even find their new home on the other side of the country, as selected items are listed on our online store which can be shopped from anywhere in Australia, anytime!
