South Beach Boardies

South Beach Boardies makes Better for the Planet Beachwear. Ethically made boardies, women's swimwear, rashies, t-shirts, bucket hats and swim nappies - in big bold prints - ethically made from Recycled Plastic Bottles.

Our commitment

South Beach Boardies is an independent, ethical family business. Founder, and ocean-lovin' Mama of four beach boys, founder and designer Kirsten has been educating people about the horrors of ocean pollution since witnessing it firsthand growing up on the Cocos Keeling Islands. We only work with factories that are committed to the Amorfi BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), a system designed to make supply chains more transparent and fair. Our factories are regularly audited on their compliance with the 11 core BSCI principles. Our fabrics are made in Italy, China and the USA, from recycled PET plastic bottles sourced locally in the country of fabric manufacture, they are certified by the Global Recycled Standard, and are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. We use minimal packaging, and our labels and packaging are all 100% plastic-free, using only biodegradable materials such as recycled card and hemp twine. 5% of our profits are donated to ocean conservation charities.

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Not only do our fabrics take waste out of the environment, but our high quality and comfortable fabrics made from recycled plastic bottles has a significant environmental benefit, whilst maintaining the quick-drying, lightweight, high performance functionality, strength, and durability of virgin polyester. Recycled polyester doesn’t require new petroleum to create, lowering the demand for new petroleum extraction. Recycled polyester production creates 55% less CO₂ emissions and requires 53% less energy consumption than virgin polyester. Of the 200 million tonnes of plastic are produced every year, it is estimated that 10% makes its way directly into the ocean, where it has a dire environmental impact, and on ocean-dwelling fauna. Recycling PET grade plastic into high-quality fabrics reduces such pollution, reduces landfill, and reduces the likelihood of plastic incineration (which releases toxic gases into the atmosphere). Our boardies last and last, we design them that way - and make all the kids styles unisex, so you can pass them down to the next kid in the team! Our offices are solar passive, powered by solar, and use grey water. We recycled everything we can, and use minimal packaging, all recycled & biodegradable.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

We're here to make a difference, and to give ocean lovers a genuinely ethical, local, independent and progressive source of board shorts. Right from the moment we first envisioned South Beach Boardies, we've always taken sustainability, ethical trade and production, and justice for workers seriously. And we still do. Our Board Shorts We only use the best quality recycled plastic (polyester) fabrics that we source from sustainable fabric mills in Italy, the USA and China. Our board shorts and swimwear are made by skilled workers in ethical factories in China and Indonesia. Why China? Because there are a lot of truly progressive factories there, with the technical expertise, and commitment to eco-friendly, zero-waste production processes and renewable resources that we have been unable to access in Western Australia. We only work with factories that are committed to the Amorfi BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), as system designed to make supply chains more transparent and fair. Our factories are regularly audited (with great results!) on their compliance with the 11 core BSCI principles.

We give 5% of our profits to ocean conservation charities.
