The Eden Planner

The Eden Planner

The Eden Planner is a 12 month diary and life planner, designed to help creatives, freelancers, and small business owners not burn-out.

Our commitment

After launching The Eden Planner in Nov 2022 and completely selling out in 3 months, we are just now finding our feet in year 2. Our founder, Sam, spent her teens as a climate activist, so sustainability has been at the forefront of Eden's goals since its inception. That's why every parcel we've ever shipped, and every parcel we ever will ship, is 100% plastic-free. Everything you receive - the cardboard mailer, the packing tape, the brand sticker and the shipping label - is also home compostable. Divesting is one of the most powerful things you can do to combat climate change. Our Eden finances are stored in Regional Australia Bank, who since 2016 have invested $0 in fossil fuels, and our superannuation is kept with climate heroes, Future Super. The next stop on our sustainability roadmap is to partner with community organisations, and to be completely carbon neutral by '24. Longer term, we will be looking at taking Eden digital... Watch this space!

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

Divesting is one of the most powerful things you can do to combat climate change. Our Eden finances are stored in Regional Australia Bank, who since 2016 have invested $0 in fossil fuels, and our superannuation is kept with climate heroes, Future Super. If you haven't already, check them out and make the switch. It takes 5 minutes to switch your Super, and sends an important message to the Super companies still investing in coal and gas. (This is not a sponsored post, I promise. We're just really passionate about Superannuation.) All our orders are sent completely plastic-free, and every part of the packaging - the cardboard mailer, the packing tape, the brand sticker and the shipping label - are all home compostable. We are also working to ensure our products have long lives. Our tote bags are already made to last, and this year our Eden Erasable Pens come with free ink refills, with the option to purchase more, to prolong the length of their working lives. Our goal is to be completely carbon neutral by 2024.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

Our planners are all made with FSC certified paper. What does this mean? The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring it sustains economic viability. FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental, social and economic standards. There are ten principles that any forest operation must adhere to before it can receive FSC forest management certification. These principles cover a broad range of issues, from maintaining high conservation values to community relations and workers’ rights, as well as monitoring the environmental and social impacts of the forest management. We are proud to only use paper that is FSC certified, and to only work with companies who have the FSC Chain of Custody certification.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

We have partnered with one of the top stationary suppliers in Shanghai to create our planners, working closely with them to create minimal waste during production as well as packing and sending the planners to us in compostable cardboard, and 0 plastic. Our accessories suppliers also ONLY ship stock to us in cardboard boxes, not individually wrapped in plastic as is customary (absurd, right!). In our first year, every single planner came in a reusable cloth bag. This year, instead of sending more cloth bags out into the world, the planners will come wrapped in a sheet of home compostable tissue paper. We also only work with companies that hold FSC Chain of Custody certificates. Why is FSC Chain of Custody important? Because these certificate holders are required to implement the FSC core labour requirements in their operations and must be able to demonstrate this to external third-party auditors. To comply with the FSC core labour requirements, the organisation must: - Not use child labour. - Eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labour. - Ensure that there is no discrimination in employment and occupation. - Respect freedom of association and the effective right to collective bargaining.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

Our goal is to be able to factor in community partnerships into our profit margin by 2024. These community partnerships will at first be with organisations based in Australia and South East Asia, with a strong focus on reforestation. The long term goal is to partner with organisations in each region we sell to, so consumers are able to see their donation going towards an initiative in their home region. We have big dreams for these little planners, and the community engagement goals are the ones that are most exciting for us.

  • How has your company made a commitment to achieve and maintain inclusion & diversity (e.g. Gender / Race / Ethnicity / National Origin / Sexual Orientation / Religion / Disability / Age)?

Eden's founder is Sam, a queer cis female with a disability, and at the moment we don't have any other full time staff! We have some fantastic occasional contractors, (mostly local artists and designers), and we very much look forward to bringing more diverse people into the fold as Eden grows. Eden aims to never make assumptions about its customers and how they choose to, and are able to, use our products. It's also incredibly important that our branding remains inclusive, and you will always see this demonstrated in Eden Planner photoshoots and product tutorials.
