The Natural Bedding Company

The Natural Bedding Company has a focus on sustainable & Australian production and design. Using the highest quality organic & natural materials to expertly handcraft their range of mattresses pillows & beautiful hardwood timber bedroom furniture.

Our commitment

At the Natural Bedding Company, sustainability is at our core. We believe that the entire lifecycle of consumer goods needs to be taken into account during production. The materials we use are all-natural and at the end of their life will return to where they came from - mother earth. We also care deeply about transparency and are committed to creating quality products that are made ethically and fairly during every stage of the manufacturing process. From the creation of the business, being able to provide a natural, handcrafted product that does not have a negative impact on the environment has been a core value. What started off with Andrew making Cotton Futons in his lounge room, has evolved over the years to where we are now, crafting beautiful handmade pieces that are non-toxic and eco-friendly. What continues to inspire the brand every day is the opportunity to keep evolving and finding the best possible products and materials to ensure we stay aligned with our vision.

The Natural Bedding Company Products

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

The Natural Bedding Company is constantly seeking new ways to offset emissions and the environmental impact of our operations. When it comes to manufacturing we don't use any toxic chemicals, predominantly handcraft our products and work to reduce as much wastage as possible. Other elements of our manufacturing where we have reduced our impact is through only using natural cleaning products, turning off all lights and power points when not in use/at end of day & installing a solar heated water tank. Looking at our despatch and shipping practices; we use eco mailers and cardboard boxes that are made up of 80%-100% recycled materials for shipping and our smaller products come in re-useable and multi-purpose cloth packaging. For internal transfers & sending goods to stockists, we opt for re-using cardboard boxes, with packaging waste segregated into recyclables and general waste by every team member. As mentioned in our brand commitment, we source and manufacture with materials that can be either recycled, repurposed or composted at the end of their life. We source our latex from the worlds first carbon neutral certified organic manufacturer and are committed to consistently looking at better more environmentally sound processes.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

Handcrafting natural mattresses & furniture for over 38 years, we have endeavoured to find leading suppliers for our quality, low-tox & sustainable materials. As mentioned above we source Carbon Neutral GOLS Certified Organic Latex for our mattresses & pillows. We also use untreated Australian Downs Wool in our mattresses; and we work with Tasmanian Oak hardwood for our bed frames and furnishings. The untreated Tasmanian Oak used in our furniture has been sustainably harvested from regrowth forest and holds the Responsible Wood PEFC certification. We finish our furniture pieces off with a non-toxic, plant based stain and use minimal water based glue in the joinery of the pieces to increase structural integrity. Other materials that can be found within our range of products include GOTS Certified Organic Cotton (pillows, organic cotton range & blended with hemp in the mattress covers), GOTS Certified French Linen & Certified Organic Wool (pillows & quilts). There is one other material that we utilise is production which is Coir, a rubberised coconut fibre that is made from stripped/shredded coconut shells and sprayed with GOLS certified latex. This is used in our firmness mattresses, including our baby mattresses.

  • How are the service/s you offer environmentally friendly?

We offer a mattress refurbishment service to our customers because we manufacture in Sydney. So for customers who may have soiled their mattress in some way during it's life cycle, they are able to send the mattress back to our factory to have the cover and wool layer (if this is part of their mattress) striped back and replaced whilst the core of latex is salvaged and reused. Latex being naturally anti microbial, anti fungal and dust-mite resistant, makes it an incredibly steadfast material that will last for up to 20 years whilst retaining it's shape and comfort.

  • Do you partner with ethical factories that meet international labor standards? What processes have you implemented to make your supply chain more sustainable?

The Natural Bedding Company is built on the values of sustainability, transparency, and ethical manufacturing. So when it comes to creating a low tox mattress or a bedding product for your home, we use only the best materials and from the most ethical supply chain possible. Our 100% certified Organic Latex and Natural Coir comes from Sri Lanka. The company that owns the plantation is certified through Control Union, one of the leading organic sustainability associations globally. They also operate a number of schemes for the workers and their families, including school programs. At The Natural Bedding Company because we hold sustainability at our core, e believe that the life cycle of consumer goods needs to be considered before, during and after production stages. Our goal is to create high quality, ethical products that are safe for our customers and the planet, and that stay with you and your family for a lifetime.
