Velicious

To provide affordable, quality, natural and delicious plant-based food and beverage products for everyone to enjoy.

Our commitment

We were driven to start a company that not only addresses the problems of climate change but also supports animal compassion. With this, we began by developing products based on our own personal challenges. This has led to our product range, which is 100% plant-based, to ensure that we reduce pressure on the environment. As part of our sustainability commitment we: • Continually improve on our product packaging by selecting eco-friendly materials without comprising product quality • Where possible, our mailing materials are compostable • At our market stalls, our food and beverage containers are 100% eco-friendly • Our food products are made from plant-based ingredients, which are known to use less land and water resources as compared to animal products • Support charities that help ocean clean up the sea, habitat restoration and help endangered species

Our Sustainability Framework

  • What is your company doing to reduce your emissions or combat key environmental issues (e.g. waste (packaging, end of life product strategy or recycling), biodiversity, land use, water, chemical use, energy use, and natural resource use etc.)?

By providing plant-based alternatives to consumers, we are making it easier for people to adopt a plant-based diet. The benefits of more people on a plant-based diet mean a lower carbon footprint, which naturally helps fight climate change. This is because lower emissions are produced, and less land and water usage are required to produce plant-based food products compared to animal-based products. We also combat the environmental issue of excess waste by ensuring most materials and packaging we use are compostable, recyclable and/or reusable. Such as: • We source our food packaging used at our market stalls through a sustainable company called Greenmark, which supplies naturally made packaging to reduce plastic waste • Our tube containers used to package our hot chocolate powders, matcha and tofu seasoning are made from recyclable materials such as tin and paper. We designed the containers with the goal that they could be reused by the consumer or for curbside recycling • For every customer who purchases our bundle pack, they receive a free reusable cotton produce bag We’ve partnered with i=change, where a dollar of every online sale is donated to one of the three environmental focused charities.

  • How are the products your company offers made from environmentally friendly materials (e.g. recycled, organic materials)?

All our products are 100% plant-based, and the packaging we use is recyclable and reusable. At market stalls, we use the following eco-friendly items: • The coffee cups are lined with a bioplastic lining PLA (poly-lactic-acid), made from corn starch, a natural renewable resource. The coffee cup lids are also made from PLA. Both the coffee cups and lids are biodegradable • For cold beverages, we use compostable cold cups and lids made from PLA. Products made from PLA use less greenhouse gas emissions as compared to the emissions used in plastic production • The muffins and cookies are packaged in kraft takeaway boxes that are recyclable and home compostable safe • We use shopping bags made of paper that are durable enough to be resuse or recycled • We also have a recycle bin at all our market stalls to ensure any recyclable products are disposed of appropriately. For our packaged products, we use either tin or paper containers. We chose these materials as they keep the food products fresh and eco-friendly. The containers are curbside recyclable or can be reused to stock other powdered products. Our shipping materials are sourced from the HeapGood company, who provides us with 100% compostable mailers and sticky tape.

  • How does your company give back to the community (e.g. financial donations, volunteering, partnerships etc.)?

Finding a way to give back and help others has always been our goal at Velicious. We aim to be role models for other businesses to see beyond profits and give back to the community, no matter how big or small. We give back to the community through: • Partnering up with i=equal change by donating $1 of every online sale to a charity the consumer selects • We donate close to expiry products to Oz Harvest at Surry Hills, NSW, when possible • All proceeds from the sales of our handmade Thai notebooks are donated to WWF • We donate products to charitable raffles such as to help flood victims and to support the Sydney Vegan Market volunteers

  • How has your company made a commitment to achieve and maintain inclusion & diversity (e.g. Gender / Race / Ethnicity / National Origin / Sexual Orientation / Religion / Disability / Age)?

We are an all-inclusive company providing respect to all our customers and staff regardless of their identities. Diversity and inclusion are part of our core values. We understand and appreciate the importance and value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We achieve this by having volunteers in our market stalls from all types of gender, religion, ethnicity, and age, creating a diverse work environment. We ensure all volunteers are supported and respected by providing different perspectives that are valued and welcomed.

  • How does your circular model or circular initiative work?

Velicious adopts a circular model that achieves business sustainability whilst fighting climate change, loss of biodiversity and ethical treatment of animals. The Velicious circular model works by using minimal inputs that are highly recyclable in the production process. Such as, the paper and tin containers used to package our powdered food products the containers become an asset as they can be reused or recycled. This leads to some or total removal of waste pollution. Also, the ingredients used in our food products are 100% plant-based, which are known to require less land and water use and produce fewer greenhouse emissions than animal-based ingredients. We aim to create value for our customers and to have them central to our circular model. This includes post-sale contributions to help with environmental charities by partnering up with i=equal change. A $1 from every online sale is donated to one of the following charities the consumer selects during the checkout: • Greening Australia • Seabin Foundation • WWF We are continually assessing and evolving our business model to increase our relevance to current global issues as part of the continual improvement of our circular economy.
